lost modules after kernel recompile

Can anyone tell me how I can make Slackware find the modules in /lib/modules again ? I recompiled the kernel using various advice like the "kernel recompiling guide for newbies" on this site.
Everything worked great except that at boot I get the message: modprobe: Can't locate module ide-scsi (for example)

If you set your kernel up for module
usage and actually followed the instructions
you should have a set of modules that
match...

What kernel did you build, what's the
output of ls -l /lib/modules?

I think I might know what happened, what I suspect is that the kernel source that I downloaded was a bit slimmed down and when I typed make modules_install it did something weird.

In the meanwhile I downloaded a kernel that seemed to be from a more 'official mirror' and only used 'make modules' after the kernel recompile (all the modules I could possibly need are already installed)

I got it working in sync with the mail from your answer
