The first GNU/Linux distro I used at home was Basic Linux (a Slackware derivative) back in 1998. I only had a 2400bps modem so it required about two hours to download. Even after obtaining a 28K modem, downloading megabytes of data was problematic as my rural phone service was very outdated; but it was fast enough to switch to Vector Linux (Slackware ISOs were CD size while Vector was about 60Mb).
