Just an update. We upgraded the 8 way to a 16 way system, we bought the new x460 and made that into a 32 way system, added 14 300 GB fiber channel drives to our new SAN has about 128 GB of ram.
I am just suprised to see something work that IBM says won't work and only "certified distro's" will work with their hardware. We showed them. |
I don't think the use of Slackware on business machines is particularly limited. At least, not for people that know what they are doing. Converted Windows admins probably would chose something like Red Hat because it's ease and support options, but *nix administrators don't have all of those concerns.
I have run Slackware almost exclusively on the servers I have setup for different companies/groups over the years. |
32 way system
I just gotsta know, how long to compile the kernel?
What kind of heat does this beauty create? And, how much noise? My mouth is watering. |

For a 32 way server, there is 8 servers connected together with smp cables. Each server has 4 CPU's with 4 passive huge heatsinks 8 fans and they blow pretty fast. All of them together is pretty loud but it blends in with the rest of the servers. Alot of heat comes out of the power supplies but the A/C in the room cools it down pretty nice, if you stand right behind the server you feel the heat, but if you take a step back, your cold once again. I have met alot of network admins who say they know linux but then they book up redhat. I am not saying Redhat isn't hard but it makes stuff alot easier. I can basically do anything I need to with command line. Here are a few pics I took with my phone while I was setting up the last server (I have 8 of these togther to make the 32 way, each one has 4 - 3.3 Ghz Xeon MP's and 16 GB's of ram). 1 is of the heatsink, 1 is of 4 CPU's installed and 1 heatsink installed, 1 is of the post screen and 1 is of all empty cpu sockets. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/2b73b6a6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/2bd790f9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/12d897bd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/23d8de7c.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/bc77ff8e.jpg |
Wow. Great system! I wish I had a chance to see how it is working.
