login problem with Slackware64-14.1 after installing Dropline Gnome 3.10
Hi all,
I have a dell laptop that triple boots Slackware32-13.37, Slackware64-14.1 and Windoze 7. Yesterday I saw that Dropline Gnome 3.10 was released for Slackware 14.1, so I rushed out, downloaded the PackageKit-0.8.17-x86_64-3dl_install.txz package and installed it on my Slackware 14.1 installation. By the way, my Slackware 14.1 also has the 32-bit compatibility libraries from Alien Bob. Okay, after installing the above package, I followed the instructions for installing the Dropline Gnome 3.10 packages: pkcon refresh force and pkcon install dropline. Both operations completed with no errors. I logged out of my Slackware64-14.1 system and attempted to log back in after arriving home from work. I always start my systems at the command line and my Slackware64-14.1 system arrived at the command line requested for my login. I gave it my user login and waited for the password request, but it only requested my login again. This time I tried to login as root with the same results, returning to login prompt. I then modified the shadow file to remove my user login password, but still no luck, only getting login prompt and never logging into system. Has anyone seen this problem?

You were able to either use single mode to remove the login password for the shadow file I see, might be handy to read thru the log files to see what happends.
normally /var/log/messages gives you the answer
@usrothwell3, it seems very strange to me that you would not be able to log in due to droplines PAM, it was tested in many different ways and i personally did it many hundred times on my machines. In any case, nobody is perfect and there can be many different reasons for this to happen.
First one I could think of is that for some unlucky reason some package have not been downloaded well. I'm not sure 100% of this, but I suspect that with network problems PackageKit doesnt resume well the download.
As second I suggest you to start the slackware boot disk and mount the partition manually and reinstall slackwares original shadow package.
Do as root:
# mount -t YOURFS /dev/sdX /mnt
# chroot /mnt
# upgradepkg shadow (slackwares original)
I think the best way is to use slackpkg upgrade-all it should replace all what we replace. Then you simply remove the packages with *-*dl tag.
** IMPORTANT ** Do not forget to reinstall slackwares original shadow package after zou remove the dropline one **
This will prevent you be locked out of the system. Or if you do not care about what gets removed do a simple slackpkg clean-system.
