Question Lockup during hd write

Installed Slack 8.1 with bare.i and scsi.s kernels (2.4.18) on my new AMD Athlon XP 2000+ box. Slack locks up with large writes to the harddisk (no response to keyboard or mouse). This usually happens at the end of or after copying of large files. It looks like it buffers a large amount of IO and when it writes it to disk, the machine locks up. Anybody any idea to fix this? (I had no problems with slower PIII boxes...)

Box specs:
- AMD Athlon XP 2000+
- ASUS A7V333 mb (266 fsb, Via KT333 and VT8233A chips, VT8233A southbridge unknown by kernel...)
- 512 MB PC2100 DDR
- Maxtor 80 GB UDMA 133 (7200 rpm)
- Toshiba DVD-ROM
- Philips CD-RW (ide-scsi)
- Matrox G450
- SB PCI 128 (es1371)
- LT winmodem (it's cheap and works :-)

VT8233A southbridge unknown by kernel
Support for this is in the 2.4.19 kernel. It's at rc2 ATM so the final should be out soon, I'd recomend upgrading now to see if that fixes the problem (note: if you compile for athlon/duron you should add 'mem=nopentium' to the append line in /etc/lilo.conf).

Thanx Aussi, upgrading to 2.4.19-rc3 did the trick :-)

btw, why mem=nopentium? I thought AMD's were fully pentium compatible...

It's a problem with agp that can cause cause a hard lock if you have a kernel compiled for K7.
