Linux router and file retriver and hoster project

I need to set up two Linux boxes, one as a router and one as a file retriever and host for my university science project. I need to download 3gb archived data files from another university's private tracked torrents that is available from RSS. I need the hosting box to download the torrents to a folder and rar them with data recovery, for every unique new entries on the RSS. Also I need the files to be shared as a NAS on the internal network and also serve the files to our project IRC channel, and also host the file through FTP for external computers on a different network. Finally I need the hosting computer and the router to be available for remote control trough telnet. Also is it possible to run SAP R/3 server on the hoster [optional] ?

The two computers I have are

hopefully router:
Dell Optiplex GX1
Intel P3-430Mhz/128MB

and
hoster:
Intel Celeron 1.6 GHZ/1GHZ

We have a budget for upgrades if needed.

Basically:

What hardware do I need?

What software should I use?

How do I best optimize slackware 11 for each computer to make them run at their best?

and a walk trough of the slackware installation for each computer would be appreciate!

Thank You advance. Also this project has 2 months before it needs to be running without a hitch, so I want to have everything planned out now. Again thank you very much for all help. Hope to hear from you soon.

also how would I put wireless on the router

For the router, you could do a "turnkey" install of SmoothWall Express 2 or perhaps IPCop.

BTW, the router hardware seems just about right for SWE.

How about the server? how will I set it up.

No clue --
1. I only use Debian & derivatives.
2. It's way too broad & general a Q for me.
