Hi,

I just read an interview with Linux Mint founder Clement Lefebvre, a french guy who lives in Ireland. Here's a nice quote about Slackware:

My first distribution was Slackware. In 1997, if I remember well, a student at my university brought a shiny set of Wallnut Creek floppies. Everybody got excited at the idea of having a Unix system at home (we were developing on IBM AIX at the university). I got immediately hooked. Slackware was (and still is) a piece of art, clean, predictable... and it was also my first encounter with Free Software.

I wander how many 70's and 80's geeks had Slackware as their first Linux. :)

I have occasionally had email exchanges with Clement about Opera (they offer it in their repositories and we did a couple of very small tweaks for the version they ship). I don't recall if I ever mentioned that Slackware is my distro of choice. ;)

One thing I will say about Mint, although it is not entirely to my personal taste I do really appreciate how he listens to his community and hence I have recommended it to others multiple times. I suspect this is how he has had the success he has had thus far, particularly in taking users from Ubuntu (who no longer seem to listen to their user base at all).

I guess I qualify as a 70's geek and Slackware was my first Linux. I do recall buying a zip drive just
so I could boot Slack from it. Don't recall the Slack version, maybe 4?

Slackware was not my first distribution, but the second. The first (in the beginning of 1994) was an Yggdrasil CD with kernel 0.99.13 (if I remember well).
