Linux for Laptops?
 

I'm about to buy a laptop but I hear a lot of laptop these days aren't fully compatible with Linux, due to winmodems, etc..... Anyone know any good up to date laptops that are fully compatible with linux? Thanks

Anyway, I installed Slackware and LFS on a Compaq Presario without any problems and the modem works fine, see this link too,

I love Slackware, I switched to it a few weeks back, and it is the best. But here's a cool trick I learned when I went shopping for a laptop:

1) Download and burn a Knoppix CD.
2) Take it to the store with you, and convince the salesperson to let you boot the different laptops they have from the CD.
3) You'll quickly figure out which are supported by linux.
4) Purchase!

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

up-to-date?...i *had* (stolen), a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 that worked perfectly (PIII 650 , 320MRAM, 10G, S3 (somethin) video , Yamaha DX/XG sound, and a lucent chipset modem...)

I would take a look at what ever notebook you're interested in and check out the hardware compatability on each peice...mainly the sound,video, and the modem chipset.

I've gotten a couple different Lucent and PCtel ones working.

most of the winmodems are supported these days and i had a no brand lap top with the cheapest material you can thing about and it worked greate with rh 8

IBMs usually (this is what I hear from everywhere) work great with Linux, specially IBM being such a great contributor to Linux these days. But I have a HP pavillion that actually works great.

i'm using a dell latitude cpx and slack works fine on it - X, sound and network (i'm using a xircom cmbo NIC with 56K modem).

I have an HP Omniboox XE3 and I must tell you that testing many distros has been a pure pleasure. HP is worth your time to check out.

I've been running Slack 8.1 on a Dell Latitude C610 as a dual boot with Windows XP for ages and it works great even after dropping it :)

The only tricky bit of hardware was the winmodem (nees the PCTEL derivers from here. I wrote a sort of newbies install guide for it a while ago.

I have been running Mandrake distros 7.1-9.0 on a cheep generic P120 laptop and a Gateway 5300, I've had some issues with LCD setup, but nothing I couldn't solve, and I'm a linux idiot at this point....

I have a Compaq LTE5300 and have managed to get Slackware 8.1 on a spare 1.2Gig hard drive (2" little guy). I would have loved to find a driver for the PCMCIA NIC (3COM "Megahertz" 10/100 model 3CXFE574BT), but apparently no one has written one (yet)? There are plenty of other 3COM drivers, but not a "574B" apparently. I tried installing via the 8-floppy method, but had to resort to doing the install on a desktop and then transfer the drive to the laptop when done -- All because the NIC drivers that are included would not work (and I DID have PCMCIA turned on too! -- using the auxillary PCMCIA floppy disk that is). I'm still having problems setting up XWindows and trying to figure out the boot errors with the "default" screen resolution, but at least it works! Anyone else? (maybe a little help?, in which case I probably should post somewhere else ;-) )...
