Another 2 cents? About the original post, typo? I didn't see anything like "make bzImage" where a new kernel was actually built. Only modules were build and installed.
In reference to looking up info on commands, the man pages are my great friend, because my memory isn't what it used to be. But for a newbie, don't forget about the HOWTOs in /usr/doc. They can go even farther in understanding how everything goes together. Back when I first started I created a sym link to it in my home directory so I could get to it easy. As for packages, look in the same directory, /usr/doc, for the program listed. Slack usually puts the docs for it there. Some packages even have excellent documentation that you can process for a printed manual.
