linux 2.6.3 kernel / VFS: cannot mount root 302

I just compilied the 2.6.3 kernel on top of slack 9.1 about 6 times trying different options for my nforce 2 with onboard video. I am first running make xconfig then I run make. Afterward I try make modules and make modules install as root. Next I copy bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz26 . Finally I edited the lilo.conf file as below and run lilo afterward both as root again. anyone have any advice?

image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda2
label = Linux
read-only

## image section for 2.6 kernel
image = /boot/vmlinuz26
root = /dev/hda2
label = Linux26
read-only

# Linux bootable partition config ends

can not mount root normally means that you have missed out the file system option in the kernel.

for example if your disks are running on ext3 and you did not add ext3 into the kernel.

It is compiled staticly correct.. and not as a module?... also.. I think after xconfig you should run make clean, then make

Shouldn't you make clean first before you make xconfig?
I stand corrected, doesn't make clean change the config file back to default?

Are you using reiserfs?

Check your /etc/fstab.
That will tell you what drive is using what filesystem. By the way, enable ext2 also if you are using ext3.
EXT3 is basically journalling on ext2. (Correct me if I am wrong.)

I dont think so.. cause I always make clean after xconfig or menuconfig..

make mrproper i think is what cleans the config file or deletes it?

no it seems like the nvidia ide controller isn't loading and the kernel is crapping out. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I got it working. I did two things and I'm not sure which one got it working but I assume it was the
PC BIOS SUPPORT listed under Advanced Partition selection in the Partition types category. Also I added support under block devices for Ram disk support and inital ram disk support. I hope this helps someone else if they are having trouble upgrading to a new kernel
