Lilo permission

Hi I am trying to modify /etc/lilo.conf to try out a new kernel. It should not be a problem but it seeems that even as root I can only get read-only access and I am unable to change my permission either through chmod or using nautilus. THe permission for lilo.conf is 600 and its says I shuld be able to have read and write access but not execution. My propble could lie in the fact that I was playing aroudn with securing Slackware and followed the advice from Jack S. Lai on this website.

As you can see you chmod 600 lilo.conf but putting this command in chmod.dat (along with other files) and then executing chmod.dat /bin/bash < chmod.dat

Since I only have read-only access I am unable to even change permision. How do I get around this issue?

This is why you never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever do anything you are unsure of as root.......

From what I gather from the instructions in the site u talked about, this would probably be the way out..

chattr -i /etc/lilo.conf , and then chmod the lilo.conf file...

man chattr, http://www.rt.com/man/chattr.1.html

I use mc (Midnight Commander) as root.
I can change (and break) anything with mc!
