Lilo error

I have recently set up a fresh system with 12.2 and have encountered an error I have not seen before on boot.

So far all I have done to this system is the following.

fresh install:
create a basic user account:
remove kde 3.5 as per the testing instructions:
install kde 4.2 testing:
ran xorgsetup:
install Nvidia drivers package from Nvidia site:
allowed Nvidia drivers to modify xorg.conf:

KDE is working fine now, the previous issue I was having was that running it as root was making akonadi not work because of mysql server not working under root.

However, the issue that has cropped up is that on reboot, the framebuffer console has stopped working. I get the error undefined video mode number 317 when lilo boots linux.

This was for my original video mode of 791, which was working fine. I tried video mode 773 and got undefined video mode number 305.

I can set to vga = normal and everything will load fine without the framebuffer console but I cannot seem to get it to work.

What could be the problem here?

I would like to help more, but 317(hexadecimal) is 791(decimal). So it means that 791(decimal) is not valid. Should the video mode be given as a hexidecimal number?

Thanks

Jim

The same thing happened to me and it turned out that I had my external Hard drive plugged in while booting. When I unplugged the drive, I was able to boot in the framebuffer mode.

The commercial nVidia video drivers don't play nice with the framebuffer at boot, in my observation. I fixed it by having the VESA framebuffer enabled (not as a module) in the kernel configuration and enabled the nVidia framebuffer as a module. That way I can still use my musty, dusty, old bootsplash stuff with no problems.

As crazy as this sounds, and because it is so unusual to me I would have never thought of it...

I had a western digital passport plugged in on usb...

Removed it and I can run framebuffer mode again.

Maybe it's because I am a Linux newbie but there is nothing conceivable to me that makes this make sense.

Oh well It's working now anyway, and kde 4.2 is working well in standard user mode, I guess I am out of problems at least for now.

I also did a new install yesterday then removed 3.5 and installed 4.2. The only difference with me is that I remained with the xorg.conf that came with the install until I compiled the nvidia driver and let the script modify the xorg.conf.

I'm using a GeForce 8400 GS.

Just for a cross reference I didn't have a framebuffer problem, and I'm not using an external drive.

I get that akonadi problem as root but I'd guess that is because it is not intended to run for/as root. It does not happen to a iser on that box when KDE opens up.
