Curious. I'd read about the 'second system effect' from Mike Gancarz's book Linux and the Unix Philosophy , but agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly.

I'm wondering what you would consider the 'third system effect'; maybe a cross between the simplicity of LILO and the extended functionality of Grub, being called by neither of its "parent's" names, but instantly recognizable as their "child", having the genetics of both of the bootloaders?

I used to use LILO decades ago. At one time it was suspected as being dead. It might return again.

My most recent two PCs have UEFI. UEFI's CSM (Compatibility Support Module) works well enough for LILO.

The first release is "make it work."

The second release is "make it do everything we wanted to do in the first version but didn't have the time to add."

The third release is "make it do enough stuff to keep people happy, and make it do that stuff right."
