I hate that, I use slapt to install evolutions and get 7 packages. Later I solved another 2-3 dependence problems by converting some rpm files to tgz and then released that I still need the libXinerama.so.1 which is part of xfree 4.4 / xorg.

(I am not going to try xfree4.4/xorg/kde3.2/gnome2.6/kernel2.6, they aren't really stable yet)

Just to clarify...

I found the original solution because I had installed and then uninstalled kde 3.2 with swaret, and after I had removed it, X wouldn't start because it was complaining about no libXinerama. The solution I posted fixed that for me.

I just did a full reinstall and upgraded to -current with swaret (which is working great). However, I didn't initially install XFree 4.4 (because the first version of the packages I tried were a bit buggy). X started fine, but Firefox refused to start, complaining about libXinerama.

I tried the solution I posted above, but in this case it didn't work, and I got an error running ld. Instead I bit the bullet and upgraded all my XFree packages to 4.4, and was surprised that it seems stable, I could compile the nvidia driver, the artwiz fonts are being rendered properly, and everything is now working how it should be with no bitching about libXinerama.

The slackware 9.1 xfree86-devel package (Xfree 4.3) includes libXinerama.a ,which is a static version of the library--only useful when compling new programs. It is located in /usr/X11R6/lib. You can convert the static library into a shared library by

ld --whole-archive -share -o libXinerama.so.1 libXinerama.a

(You need to be root to do this.) I found that this satisfied the libXinerama.so.1 dependency for KDE3.2.2 from -unstable.

I had a wild hair to upgrade my Mozilla from 1.4 to 1.6 on my Slackware 9.0 install. I got the 1.6 from Slackware current and did upgradepkg. Waded through the dependency errors upgrading libraries including gtk2, atk, etc. Got to the libXinerama problem. Upgraded X from 9.1, 4.3.3 I think. Still no good. Found this tread.

I get a file not found when I try ld. What package provides this?

I gave up and tried to revert back to Mozilla 1.4. Did removepkg on the 1.6 and installpkg on the 1.4 from the Slackware 9.1 cd I had. When I started up Mozilla 1.4 I got the libXinerama error again! wtf! I had rebooted to get the libraries to be updated. What causes this? Do I need to undo something that was added by the Moz 1.6 install?

I just realized that maybe I should have used the Moz 1.4 from Slack 9.0. Do you think that would get me back to running Moz 1.4.

Here or somewhere else it was mentioned as a solution to compile Moz 1.6 without libXinerama support. Is that a practial solution for someone who has not compiled anything before?

I wish Slackware would update Mozilla versions sooner.

Why are there these problems when the system requirements per the Moz site seem less than what is in Slack 9.0? The Moz site says it is tested with Red Hat. Does RH include libraries not in Slackware?

Thanks for your help.
