Exclamation Libgtk undefined symbol after 10.0 upgrade

Hello all,

It's time to start posting again with major issues rather than little things I'm trying to work out. I decided to take the plunge and upgrade from Slack 9.1 to 10.0 by following the instructions in UPGRADE.TXT to the letter. Everything worked well enough (the kernel boots, X starts, etc.), but now I have quite a few majorish problems I'm facing.

Starting with the first...

If I try to run firefox, thunderbird, gimp, mozilla, etc. (anything gtk-based it seems), I get the following error:

Code:
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: relocation error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: pango_ellipsize_mode_get_type
I see the beauty and power of lynx, but I'd like to run something graphical every now and then

Any suggestions for how to fix/troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

--EDIT--
On a hunch I tried removepkging and installpkging gtk+2, and that fixed the problem altogether. Sorry for taking up board space, but maybe this will help someone with the same problem in the future.

Well, now it is again. The problem was fixed, but after I've rebooted it's happening again. Any ideas?

Interesting. 9.1 and 10.0 are quite different in their core - I found the jump from 10.0 to 10.1 quite painful.

A few queries:

* Are these GTK apps custom-compiled by you?
* Can you run any GTK app that came with 10.0? I see gFTP exists at the 10.0 stage under slackware/gnome/.
* Did you use upgradepkg or installpkg to update your system, and which version of upgradepkg did you use?

Please forgive me if the questions are rather patronising - but we need to know as much about your system as possible to suggest what happened to cause the issues.

On another topic, I'm still looking into your other glib problem and have some ideas, but I'm still trying to formulate the solution.

Take care,
- Piete.

Thanks for the suggestions. For both the gtk and glib problems it turns out I'd previously installed an upgraded version and the Slack upgrade installed a duplicate one. I removed the conflict and everything is fine on both issues.
