LFS with Slackware base
 

Hi,

I'm thinking about starting to build linux from scratch with slackware-current base. I thought it might be fun to learn and understand more about how linux works under the hood.
I haven't started yet but I have a couple of questions to ask:

1. Which one do you guys suggest me to install the system into: virtualbox or external hdd? If I install the system into a virtualbox would that give me the real image how to install the system - for example - into my laptop?

2. I guess that I proceed with expert install mode and install all the packages that the book (lfs) suggests. Is there something more that you guys suggest me to install to make my life easier in the future?

3. I'm hoping that I could use pkgtools to manage packages. Would that be hard to accomplish?

I hope I manage to build working system with KDE4, I have downloaded the whole slackware-current tree to my computer.

I have been really busy for the past couple of months and I'm sorry if I'm asking stupid questions or the questions have been answered before. I'll have a week long holiday soon and then I will be able to concentrate to this project.

Are you asking about using a fresh Slackware install as a host to build LFS,
or using the LFS book to build Slackware from the Slackware sources?

You talk about using the expert install, if not for a host, then I don't understand.
It's possible that I could just be stupid on the matter.

If you're asking about building BLFS on a Slackware base,
I've tried it but the init scripts and other configs(?) are different.

I didn't persue it any farther, but I'm sure it could be done.
Just not by me at this point.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I ment to use fresh Slackware install as a host to build LFS.

Just make sure you install the "d" and "tcl" groups and you should have everything you need to compile LFS.

Slackware is a good choice for a host.
