Lesson learned... Beware of this software...
 

Well I have just finished re-installing my whole Slack 9.1 due to some very unruly software...
Linuxconf... It is destructive over system files when it is installed and the uni-installer does not work. I had to do a complete re-install to correct the damage done. Using backups did not work. I have used my full system backup to bring over most of my system config files.

But it is not all bad... Seeing when I first installed Slack last month it was my linux "cherry" ;) . The second install went much better and as I expect very different from the first time same as BSD. (every time I install BSD from the same disk the same way it comes out different than the last time even on the same computer...) go figure...

I will stick to what I know best for configuring boxes -- the console... Dawg a kids GUI...

If you are looking for good configuration tool, working good for Slackware, then you should try webmin. I use it constantly and never had problems. It is easy to install, web browser based (any), user friendly, customizable with many plugins. And it helps with many configuration tasks.

Isn't Linuxconf a RH-centric app? Although I do admit, from my previous experience with it... pure evil! ;)

Thanks for the tip on Webmin, I will look at it though I may not load it, being gun shy now...

As for Linuxconf type, RH, not sure, but what it does do and does not undo is moves cmds in bin-sbin and others system wide to a *.old then makes sym links to the original name to itself. It also requires several "previous" libs which I would assume is for compat. When I tried to uninstall it with it's own supplied script it took the previously moved commands, the libs and current libs, wiped out x, gnome and gtk. It must have changed permissions system wide also as my backup disk was all but inaccessible. During the install I answered no to it overwriting these and rc.d files but believe it did it anyway. I don't know how well linuxconf may work with other distros but as far as Slack goes it is a system "killer" at least it was to mine...

I know some people may find it difficult to configure a box with OSs like GNU/linux, BSD and Unix, but this is part of their beauty the ability to customize and streamline. IMO if these people find it to "hard" or "intimidating" then they should stick to Windows. It is a fools errand to think a Unix flavor is just PnP......
