Latest Wine + Slack 9.1

From a SlackWare 9.1 KDE 4.3 DeskTop I recently:

-downLoaded latest wine from http://linuxpackages.net/
-used Kpackage to install same

Then from a SHELL I typed "wine" and got:
--------------------------SNIP--------------------------
root@hal1:~# wine
Wine 20041201
Usage: wine PROGRAM [ARGUMENTS...] Run the specified program
wine --help Display this help and exit
wine --version Output version information and exit
root@hal1:~#
--------------------------SNIP--------------------------

Then I typed "wine c:\\windows\\sol.exe" and got:
--------------------------SNIP--------------------------
root@hal1:~# wine c:\\windows\\sol.exe
wine: cannot find 'c:\windows\sol.exe'
root@hal1:~#
--------------------------SNIP--------------------------

Yes sol.exe is there, yes I can access c: drive from Linux.
All I did was dl/install the package.
What else must one do to get this package to work.
Yes, I've read every SlackWare entry concerning wine.

Would ONLY SlackWare 9.1 type PerSonnel please respond?
SomeOne who has installed/configured wine successfully?

Thanks.

Hi,
Can you show your wine config file. Sounds like you may not have the drive mappings correct. If you need one to compare to instead, here is mine:-

WINE REGISTRY Version 2
;; All keys relative to \\Machine\\Software\\Wine\\Wine\\Config

;; If you think it is necessary to show others your complete config for a
;; bug report, filter out empty lines and comments with
;; grep -v "^;" ~/.wine/config | grep '.'

;; MS-DOS drives configuration

;; Each section has the following format:
;; [Drive X]
;; "Path"="xxx" (Unix path for drive root)
;; "Type"="xxx" (supported types are 'floppy', 'hd', 'cdrom' and 'network')
;; "Label"="xxx" (drive label, at most 11 characters)
;; "Serial"="xxx" (serial number, 8 characters hexadecimal number)
;; "Filesystem"="xxx" (supported types are 'msdos'/'dos'/'fat', 'win95'/'vfat', 'unix')
;; This is the FS Wine is supposed to emulate on a certain
;; directory structure.
;; Recommended:
;; - "win95" for ext2fs, VFAT and FAT32
;; - "msdos" for FAT16 (ugly, upgrading to VFAT driver strongly recommended)
;; DON'T use "unix" unless you intend to port programs using Winelib !

Thanks for that.
I must have missed something . . .

I don't have a winecfg file, I tried to config wine by typing:
winecfg
and I got this:

root@hal1:~# cd /
root@hal1:/# winecfg
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"x11drv.dll": libXxf86vm.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Could not load graphics driver 'x11drv'
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"c:\\windows\\system\\winecfg.exe" failed, status c0000142
root@hal1:/#

What else did you do following wine package install?

Thanks.

dufferin 12-19-2004 04:33 PM

I had Konquerer set to NOT show hidden files . . .duh.
Now I can see /.wine I copied your file to that directory
naming it "config" made NO changes, then I typed:
wine c:\\windows\\sol.exe
now I get this:

root@hal1:/# wine c:\\windows\\sol.exe
wineserver: /root/.wine/config is not a valid registry file
wine: for some mysterious reason, the wine server failed to run.
root@hal1:/#

Any ideas how to make it a valid registry file?
I know I must edit my config file.
Is there anything else?

Thanks.

dufferin 12-19-2004 05:39 PM

I edited config as best I could.
Then I typed
winecfg
and got this:

root@hal1:/# winecfg
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"x11drv.dll": lie: No such file or directory
Could not load graphics driver 'x11drv'
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"c:\\windows\\system\
root@hal1:/#

any suggestions?
Thanks.

I notice that you have your .wine directory off root. This is not a good place to put it. The config file really needs to be in your /home/user directory. Also, you will need to edit it to point to your fake windows drive. Where it shows [Drive C]
"Path" = "/home/xxx/c.old", you need to alter for your own box. It might be advisable for you to get the package winesetuptk. Do a google for it, but it is available from rpmfind.net, but only as an rpm, so you will need to do an rpm2tgz on it. This helps set up wine fairly easily.
Other than that, you could find your hidden .wine directory under your /home/user, rename it to something like .wine.bak, then from a console prompt, as user, simply run the wine command. This should set up for you a new .wine directory with an example config file which you will then need to edit to suit your preferences.
If none of that works, then I would suggest removing the pkg from linuxpackages, then grab the source from sourceforge, and compile it yourself.
Hope this helps
