Latest Slackware update (27 Aug. 2010) and Nvidia . . .

Probably everyone else in the world knows this, but I had to figure it out.

The latest Slackware update includes and update Xorg server. Be aware that if you're using a proprietary video card driver (like Nvidia's for instance), you'll need to reinstall it after the upgrade.

hm thats interesting, I upgraded the xorg packages and restarted, and everything worked as normal, I didnt have to reinstall the Nvidia driver.

Same here. No problems after the upgrade.

Have you tried running glxgears? It's usually the OpenGL library that gets overwritten and causes problems.

I'm in the habit of doing it as a matter of course now whenever I see a Xorg package update.

Bingo! Everything worked well after the update except the games I have that rely on OpenGL and some of the KDE special effects that rely on it too.

After a reinstallation, everything was fine.

Benefit for SlackBuild users: no reinstall needed. Just do "nvidia-switch --nvidia" and be happy :)

Yep - I noticed this right after the reboot. So I uninstalled, then re-installed.

Likewise. Ditto. Me too.

reinstalled nvidia, and everything worked OK

I used to have NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31-pkg2.run,
My effects disappeared with the X update. Could not reinstall
because of some bug where it could not find the kernel headers.
So I reinstalled the kernel source with pkgupgrade --reinstall,
and then installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.27-pkg2.run,
which is supposed to the latest, and it glitched like crazy,
so I rolled back to NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31-pkg2.run,
and that worked.

Ack! I should have thought of that. Oh well, a simple 'upgradepkg --reinstall nvida*.t?z' worked well for me. It installed my regular driver and the 32-compat driver too.

Hi,

This and a restart of X did it for me too.

Kind regards,

Eric

Yep, broke compositing. A quick reinstall fixed it right up.
