Large toolbars in Firefox after upgrade, plus corrupt ncurses display

Hi all,

After a mostly successfull upgrade I have just 3 problems I need help with, so here goes:-

1) The toolbars in Firefox are to big. Almost as if the font for the toolbars is just completely oversized. I have checked a couple of other threads that seem to indicate this as an issue in SUSE, but without a real answer as to what the problem might be. Anyone come across this at all, and a cure?

2) When running any ncurses util. i.e. pkgtool, mc etc, the display is corrupt, that is, any sort og ncurse window (for want of a better description) is surrounded in what looks like a capital A with an upside down subscript u above it, and the beginning of each line has a number 3 at the beginning and end.

3) Finally, when starting KDE in 1400x900 resolution, the screen is tiled until I use the KDE desktop -> display setting to adjust to a lower resolution then back again, when it reverts to full screen mode.

Any help an any of the above please?

Thanks

Could you be more specific about "mostly successfull"? What errors did you have?

Did you follow instructions in UPGRADE.TXT (ex: check .new configuration files in /etc) and CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT?

For your problem #3, could you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

Since the release of Firefox 3.0, FF obeys Gtk themes. You'll have to tweak your gtk theme (or load a different one) and/or get your hands dirty in your userChrome.css in your local chrome-dir.

Depending on how many Gtk apps you actually use, I recommend userChrome.css.

Firefox toolbars: could be as easy as right-clicking on the toolbar, select the Customize menu option, then enable the Use Small Icons check box.

Ncurses display: sounds like a console font issue. Take a look at /etc/rc.d/rc.font. If a font is defined there, comment out the line. Or remove the executable bit. Or as root use the setconsolefont tool to select a different console font.

KDE display: KDE inherits whatever is defined in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Be sure the Modes lines in Section "Screen" contain the resolutions you want, in descending order. If KDE then cannot maintain the desired resolution, then in the Control Center manually select the resolution you want and then enable the Apply settings on KDE startup check box.

For #1 you can try a different font size with gtk-chtheme

Errors during install could indicate that a piece of your rig is about to fail. I've experienced machines running fine one day, then giving me weird compile issues the other and then dying on the third.

Whenever a machine is acting up for odd reasons, I back up my data and hope for the best. :>

OK,

1 and 3 solved.

Q1 cured by deleting my .mozilla profile directory, and restarting FF. Don't see why an upgrade should cause problems in the profile, but this cured it.

Q3 just needed me to install the latest ATI drivers.

Just Q2 to go. Have tried the suggestions here so far to no avail, so any more ideas anyone?

Thanks

For Q2, it may be it may be a UTF problem.

From my Upgrade HowTos (see my signature - they are useful for fresh installs as well by the way):

If you find you have problems with the console after this upgrade you might need to add the following append line for each of your kernel images listed in your /etc/lilo.conf.

The new 2.6.24.x kernels default to use a UTF8 console. This might break some
things, so if you prefer the "old" default, you'll need to add this to your
kernel's lilo stanza: append = "vt.default_utf8=0"
Alternatively, you may want to set a proper locale (edit /etc/profile.d/lang.sh and login again).
