System is a HP Pavillion dv6000. Duo core at 1.7 gig, 2 gigs ram, a 160 gig disk. Has Vista installed (sorry). Put on full install of slack 12 with no problems. Dual boot works fine. HOWEVER can't get the dchp (I guess) to work. Running off of a LinkSys wireless router, no problems in windows. In Slack running iwconfig gets this:
lo no wireless extensions.
The only error messages that I can see when booting are near the end and are as follows.
1: Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevtrigger--retry-failed
and
2: dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket: Address already in use.

Best I can decipher wireless is WAN Miniport(L2TP). Serial modem on com 3.
I'm lost. hope this is enough info. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply and pardon my probable ignorance but I am not getting to any network when Linux is running - just in case I didn't make that clear.

The command "lspci -v" may give better information as to the nature and build of your wireless adapter. It clearly needs a driver that is not present in Slackware's kernel.
If you tell us what lspci outputs, you may get a better answer.

I would be thrilled to post the results of "lspci -v" but I can't get Slack to believe that I can copy a file to windows partition so that I can post it. ARGH! Tried in KDE. Says I have RW all over everything but still says I don't have permission to write the file to anywhere on fat-c. I know the answer is easy but I can't find it. Help (again).
p.s also edited etc/fstab and set fat-c to "defaults". Didn't help.

Here are what looked like the two relative entries from "lspci -v".
02:00.0 Network Controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02) on IRQ 11

05:08.0 Ethernet Controller: Intel Corporation PRO/100 VE Network Connection (rev 02) on IRQ 10

nothing else looked applicable. Hope this helps

Post the output of "lspci". Also post the output of "iwconfig". Since this is crucial you might want to take the time to write it down since you can't traverse between you window$ and linux partitions, and then post it here.

The ipw3945 driver doesn't ship with Slackware so you can stop suggesting things that show you're not actually reading anything the OP is saying.

What he needs is the following:

Hate to correct you put Slackware ships with ipw3945 starting with 12.0.

patostevens, check Slackware's /extra and you should find packages and info about how to get the ipw3945 running.

True - I just got my ipw3945 running using what's in the /extra directory of disk 3. I wouldn't exactly call it a package. You have to do everything manually - not with Slackware package tools.

FWIW, this is not an error message. The "--retry-failed" is an option passed to udevtrigger.

Haven't used Slackware on my laptop for a while so my memory was bit fuzzy on the directory contents.
