Laptop keyboard stops responding after usb mouse installed

I got a strange problem with my IBM T23 laptop which has been runing without problems slackware 10.1 for some time. I recently purchased a usb mouse. The mouse (/dev/input/mice) works perfectly at the console with gpm and so does everything else but when i start X after a few (10?15?) keystrokes the keyboard stops responding.. the mouse works fine! at the same time i got no problem on virtual consoles! any ideas? I tried the mouse on a friends laptop using WInXP and it works fine.

Perhaps change the device in xorg.conf. /dev/input/mice or /dev/input/mouse0 etc...

I think i have solved the problem, it had something to do with gpm starting with the -t ps2 parameter and the mouse being usb!
