- Find the 'series' of the sound card using:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
(I got 'Codec: IDT 92HD71B7X')

- In the file '/usr/src/linux-`uname -r`/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt' (or you can use this link: http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentat...dio-Models.txt), find what the Dell models have similar series number as yours. In my case I search for '92HD71B')

- Create an option for sound the system will load at boot. In my case, I created /etc/modprobe.d/dell-inspiron1545.conf that contains:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1

- Reboot

(dell-m4-1 is one of the models that have sound card series 'STAC92HD71B*'. Maybe you have to change some times until you find one that works for you).

Hope that helps.
Thank you, worked at least well for me with my ThinkPad. But I'm wondering, why my speakers did this after I installed Lilo into the MBR. It worked when I first booted from USB but when I tried to boot again from USB to avoid the error it didn't work either.

@keyserSoze:
Have you tried alsactl init? It sets things to the default state, which might be a good place to start.

According to this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/792233 the problem was fixed in ALSA 1.0.24. (The Mixer name : 'Intel ID 2805' matches that shown in your AlsaMixer screenshot). This version of ALSA is available in Slackware 13.37. I suggest you upgrade your 13.0 install.

@bnguyen :
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
For this command, my output is :
Codec: Realtek ID 665
Codec: Intel ID 2805

What could be my sound card series based on this ?

Don't see a relevant result in HD-Audio-Models.txt that matches your output, so I'm not sure. Maybe my aforementioned method cannot solve your issue.

Since your laptop model is rather new, best solution would be using Slackware 13.37. In the meantime, you could try to upgrade alsa-lib and alsa-utils to see whether it can solve the problem. You can get the sources from:

http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackwar...ce/l/alsa-lib/
http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackwar...ap/alsa-utils/
