My computer is running Slackware 13.37 64 bits. I have two users running constantly, one with kde desktop and the other with xfce. Most of the time xfce desktop user is the one actively running or being used. kde user only uses it once or twice a day. The computer is never shutdown (24x7). I noticed today that the kwin is being eating 70%, 4Gb of memory. There is nothing running on KDE user, no screensaver or game or open windows. Therefore I went and disable the desktop effect is KDE desktop but still the memory usage still abnormally high for not being use.

If this problem continues I just about to use xfce for both users. Any comments, suggestions or similar problem and how you solve will be appreciated.

PS I already read 5 different forums on this website with problem related to this and google it and it seems to me that there is just KDE problem, not slackware.

Maybe you can try to the more recent KDE packages?

Those new KDE packages are not meant for Slackware 13.37! You'll have to upgrade to Slackware 14 Beta1 first.

You could try with KDE 4.6.5, which was still compiled on 13.37. You can find it on Alien's ktown repo.
If you'd like to try a more recent version of KDE, I'm in the process of uploading my KDE 4.9 packages compiled on Slackware64 13.37 (using Alien's SlackBuilds, of course ).
When the upload will be finished (still 3 hours to go...) I'll post the link, if you're interested.

I have been losing my trust in KDE. I think are going to stick with Xfce for the moment and use KDE when is absolutely necessary. I don't think that upgrading, unless there is a bug, will solve the problem of KDE acting as a resources hog.

Oh, but versions after the KDE 4.5 of Slackware 13.37 have a considerably reduced memory footprint! The difference with the KDE 4.8.4 which is now in slackware-current (soon to become Slackware 14) should be very clear. There are performance improvements all over the place as well - in particular kwin which is the main application with which you intereact all the time.
