KPPP Dies Exit Status 16 with Nortel/Verizon USB760 Slackware64 13.1

I'm having problems with KPPP constantly dying with "exit status 16: cannot determine Ethernet destination for proxy ARP" (the kind of thing you get with a modem when KPPP is set faster than the modem can talk).

The modem, in this case, is a Nortel/Verizon USB760. Typical signal level is two, sometime three bars (and, yeah, sometimes one with two flickering). I can get connected, I may remain connected for as little as a minute, as long as a couple of hours, who knows. So far, writing this, I've been disconnected twice.

The system is configured for loopback, I'm in all the groups I need to be in for both dial-up and wi-fi and the thing will stay connected and work fine for hours in Win7 (dammit).

Seems like it might be a daemon thing, a HAL thing, some sort of thing and I don't really know where to start digging (or what do do when I get there).

Any ideas are appreciated.

KPPP isnt really maintained in KDE right now. Maybe you could try doing all needed steps manually.

you can have a try with wvstreams and wvdial (vbatts updated it to 1.6.1 to run on 13.1 on his github repository): I'm using them for my internet key connection.

Thanks, I'll give wvstreams a shot and see what happens. Frankly, I think it's mostly where I am and the ify cell phone service 'round these parts; seems like I get a connection, go along for a while, then the modem loses the signal (even though I have an external antenna attached to the thing), resets, and KPPP can't talk to it any more -- when this happens I can no longer communicate with the modem. The benefits of living in the woods, I suppose. Have to shut down KPPP, pull the modem out of the socket, wait a while, plug the modem back in, wait a while, reconnect and use it till it craps out again (ain't technology grand).

Actually I think the "fix" is going to be the fiber optic that's supposed to be here in a month or three or HughesNet (that at least works!).

Ah, well. Thanks for the input.
