korean/hangul fonts & input
 

anyone here been successful in getting korean fonts and input working under slackware 10.1? the kde international packages does not include korean fonts for some reasons.?

on another note, i currently have korean fonts and input working (somewhat) under fc4 on another machine. but the korean input does not seem to work inside openoffice there seems to be an issue between iiimf and openoffice. :-(

i am in the process of downloading SCIM hopefully this will allow korean input within open office.

being that i had iiimf running ; i wasn't able to run scim - just trying to load scim in X windows resulted in a crash of the application. i did some further browsing on the web the other day and found another method of getting korean input to work with linux: nabi or translated into english from korean means 'butterfly' its an open source project that lets one implement korean input in linux and best of all its free! i have yet to try it out yet but the korean input seems to be universal that is you can write hangul in any appliciation you want like gaim or openoffice ( i hope ). when i get the chance i'll try it out in slackware and post an update if any of you out there want to try it out then do so and post a message on how it went.

I finally got Nabi to work. I can both display and input Korean characters. The displaying of Korean characters was the easy part, that worked without Nabi.

I am running Slackware 10.2, Kernel-2.6.14.3, KDE 3.5, OpenOffice 2.0, and Nabi 0.15.

So far I have been able to input Korean characters in Konqueror, KMail, Konsole, and OpenOffice Writer. Switching between Korean and English works as well. If you want more info on how I got it working reply to this.

Yes. Please post the information. I am trying to get FC4 setup for my wife so she can email her family back and forth in Korea.

have korean family myself would like to learn hangul. I am wondering what the hell happened to the language support it was working nicely in earlier versions of kde and slackware. kinda ticked off slackware no longer comes with the kde & koffice ko(korean) package

how do I go about this working now?

not to interested in typing just reading.

seems number of languages I install wind up only being square blocks instead of characters.

appreciate some guidance.

Well I got everything working for my wife and it only took a few minutes.

This is how I did it in FC4:

1. I had to install the Korean Language support from the distro install disk. This can be done using the Add/Remove Applications under System Settings. This allowed the display of hangul characters.

2. I had to Google for NABI the input method application and found it on some SourceForge type site in Korea. It installed rather easily and the configuration is pretty much self explanatory.

I will have to Google again to find the the NABI site link. Once I find it again I will post it here.
