I think it's because of known conflict with rc.gpm, and tried to fix it the usual way (install DVD at booting, then chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm), but I can't find that file, nor access any other partition.
I'm using the standard sata.i kernel, and the other possible source of the problem would be having the keyboard mapped in spanish (es.map). The weirdest part is that the keyboard works until just before the keyboard is remapped and rc.gpm starts running.
Don't run gpm ... I believe it gives you an option not to start it automatically, if not, boot a live CD and either delete or rename '/etc/rc.d/rc.gpm'
