before you get mad and say use the search button I did and I came up with lots of good tutorials to change the kernel.
1 big question I have is. You have to change the lilo config to boot into the new kernel.
How would i go by doing this since I use a floopy to boot? Like would I have to create a new image for the floppy? I also didn't install lili into the MBR at boot.
Same thing or is there another way to do it?
If anybody could help I would really like it thanks.
I don't use lilo but I am sure that if you don't change the kernel name (say vmlinuz) and the boot and root partitions, you don't have to change lilo config
If you boot from floppy you have to make a new boot floppy with new kernel in it after each kernel compile
For linux, I just pop in a floppy when I tirn on the computer and then a screen show up and I hit eneter and it loads vmlinuz I guess and then it starts to load after the image loads
well I get a screen and I have to hit enter to boot.
There are other options I can do but I don't rmember what they are. I am not sure if the kernel boots from the floppy or hard drive. I have only been using Slack for less then 24 hours.
Maybe one simple thing to do is to boot with your floppy, boot slackware, configure and compile kernel and then use sbin/makebootdisk to make a new boot floppy.
just insert a floppy and type makebootdisk and it will make a new floppy with your new kernel. You may need to tell it where the kernel is if you have two installed. examples: (/boot/vmlinuz) or (/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.26)
