Kernel Recompile - Blank screen - ATI X800 PCIe
Hi,
Just after doing a kernel recompile from 2.4 on a fresh Slackware install to kernel 2.6.17.13. It's working but the framebuffer appears not to be supported - it remains blank on the terminal, whereas 2.4 works fine (with framebuffer). I've tried the command lspci in 2.4 and it does say that the grpahics card, which is an ATI X800 XL, PCI express is unknown, but is an ATI card. On the menu options for kernel 2.6, I have selected framebuffer support (it is enabled now by default I beleive) and also the PCI Express support under bus options. In the Graphics card section, I have tried: Ati Radeon support on its own, Ati Radeon support & VESA graphics support Ati Radeon support & VESA graphics support & VGA support VESA grpahics support & VGA support All compiled into the kernel. Every combination has resulted in a blank screen. The motherboard is a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (rev. 1). What am I missing? |
I don't know what you are missing, and I think that what I will say won't help, but did you try xorgconfig ?
|
Try changing the color depth and/or resolution of the framebuffer. Probably won't help but can't hurt to try.
|
I have left the resolution setttings to 1024 x 768 256 colours from the initial fresh install of slackware.
Changing resolutions and bit depths appears to make no difference. |
I don't think a blank screen is completly the framebuffer faults. You should be getting a prompt to choose a different screen mode if your current display setting is unavailable. There are a collection of options you need to enable for framebuffer (some of wich are included in Charecter Devices-->) Also, make sure sure you have mode switching enabled, and correct support for your monitor. I only bring up the last one because I got a blank screen when I did not correctly configure the LCD monitor for my laptop.
If you are still having trouble, list all of the config options you enabled that you think are relevent, and I'll tell you if your missing any. regards, ...drkstr |
Edit your lilo.conf file (in the /etc directory) and go to the section that lists the various vga modes. Comment out whatever one is currently being used, and uncomment the "vga=normal" line. Rerun /sbin/lilo and hopefully that should do it. Good luck with it

Right, here is the output from lspci (using a terminal remotely so I can see what I am doing):

Finally, the full specs of the machine I'm trying to get this to work on:
AMD Opteron 165 at stock speed MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum NForce4 Ultra Motherboard (Rev. 1) 1GB DDR RAM Seagate 300GB PATA IDE Hard drive Gigabyte Silentpipe X800 XL PCI Express Graphics card (model GV-RX80L256V) Everything is at stock speed and is not overclocked. |
What about "vga=normal"? Have you tried that? I faced the exact same problem you describe and what I mentioned above solved it for me.
