Question kernel problems

hello everyone, I am rather new to linux and am having some trouble with several things.

1) I have compiled the new 2.6.5 kernel on two computers and am getting the same results on both.

a) On the desktop i recompile and install the kernel and after rebooting i my NIC is not shown. I used the make oldconfig option to confgure the kernel.

b) on the laptop i have the same problem with the NIC, but also on the laptop i am having troulbe with Kismet on the old kernel. When i try and start Kismet it wont start unless there is an access it can pull an IP from. I am sure this is because the module is being unloaded, but i have no idea how to keep the module from being unloaded.

Thanks for the help.

What is your NIC and what module did you compile for it (either loadable or static).

Is the card listed by lspci?
Is the module loaded by lsmod?
