kernel problem
When I have compiled the 2.4.19 kernel and reboots i get an messege that says somthing about the display and I have to choose a resolution (rows). But I donīt get that nice penguin in the top corner during slackware boot up. And I canīt have a very good resolution either.
What should I do?

Please help

You need to make sure that you compiled framebuffer support into your new/rebuilt kernel. It's in the video options.

It sounds like your lilo config is for framebuffer mode. It may be that the new kernel does not have the framebuffer options enabled. If you were running a default slack kernel then I would suggest using the config for that kernel and then modify what you desire. All of the kernels provided on the CD have the config for the kernel in the directory with the kernel. Mount the CD and locate the directory for the kernel you were running. Probably kernels/bare.i. Copy the config file to the your kernel source tree as .config and pay special attention to the period on front of the filename. It has to have the period. Then execute "make clean" to reset the kernel sources. Then make the changes you desire, recompile and install.

It seems that you have line similar to 'vga=xxx' (instead of 'vga=normal') in your '/etc/lilo.conf' but you don't have appropriate frame-buffer support compiled as part of your kernel. Try to recompile your kernel again this time including it.
Below you can see how my 'lilo.conf' looks like:

boot = /dev/hda
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
timeout = 50
vga = normal
default = Linux_SMP
other = /dev/hda2
  label = Windows
  table = /dev/hda
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda3
  label = Linux_UP
image = /boot/vmlinuz-smp-2.4.19
  root = /dev/hda3
  label = Linux_SMP

so upon a boot I have not one but two penguins sitting on top of my left screen ;)

Would it be possible changing the little penguin?
