at first i have to say that i'm relatively new to GNU/Linux and do not really know what to do. I've just installed Slackware 10.1 on my Notebook as described in the Slackbook. Everything worked well and i had no problems during installation, but while starting Slackware my system hangs up! I've never seen my system hanging up this way: Two of the LEDs (SCROLL- and CAPS-lock) signaled simultaneousely and the fan became louder and louder. The two last lines are:
Warning: unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel
So i reinstalled Slackware again, but i got the same problem again. What's wrong? I had Slackware 10.0 once installed and it worked well, but its a long time ago and i'm a little helpless now. I really don't know what to do, please help me! Thanx in advance!
Are you getting the lilo boot showing your choices? Will your box allow you to write to the mbr, some bios settings will disallow this. What kernel did you install?
yeah, i had no problem installing lilo to the mbr and it works well, with dualsystem windows and slackware. slackware starts booting, but not to the end. it hangs up after some (many) lines with the described problem.
Thanx sundialsvcs, now i know what you meant!! I had to use Knoppix to correct the problem in lilo.conf and repaired my LILO as follows:
->console
% su
# cd .. (to /)
# mount /dev/hda7 /boot
# mount /dev/hda8 /mnt/hda8
# ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-ide-2.4.29 vmlinuz
# cd /mnt/hda8/etc
# lilo -C /mnt/hda8/etc/lilo.conf
# reboot
Everything worked well and i have no problems with a seperate /boot - Partition anymore! THX again!
