kernel make gconfig

Usually when i type make gconfig inside /usr/src/linux it displays the kernel configuration window , but now returns ( commnad not found)

Anyone knows out there what to do to restore it ?

i did install the make package , then i typed make gconfig which gives an error

>> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries
>> You must have Ncurses installed in order

Any help ?

Install ncurses :)
It comes with slackware.

Sorry - since I'm writing offline I'm a little behind...
...why should these packages be missing?

type "which make" - if it returns with the location - make is there...

What's not there or misconfigured, is gconfig then...

But you do not even need to bother with this - it is probably possible for you to use
"make menuconfig" in a terminal - or on a console (this produces colored output - whereas running it in a terminal gives me only black/white output - dont know why...)
Mybe even "make xconfig" works...

It is all the same - they just look different...

I guess he select few packages in his install that's why they're missing, ncurses is requerid to make menuconfig, if he wants gconfig he'll have to get gtk too.

props666999 08-07-2004 02:26 PM

during slackware setup i did the full install (3gb)
i have installed the appropriate packages , but still gives the error

even in X i cannot run make menuconfig under /usr/src/linux

jomen 08-07-2004 02:33 PM

You are right - ncurses are needed...
he probably uninstalled some important things - he says it was working before...

Does this package-managing system not even try to resolve dependencies?
If gconfig is installed - all the needed stuff for it to work properly should have been installed too! - at least suggested to do so !

when in doubt use make menuconfig. It works in the black screen w/o X windows

No deps with slackware ;) and I love just that...(because system maintenance is a hell with distributions wich resolve dependencies for you).

Also what is gconfig that you mentioned ?

jomen 08-07-2004 03:06 PM

"make menuconfig" will need ncurses to be installed...

Cedrick - I did not mention it - the original poster did and I just used that name - Im always using "make menuconfig"...

But - you see where it ends (at least for some not very experienced users) not to have such a package-management-system.

I was used to that from Debian - and this was at the same time very cool to have as also the reason I built my own system - I do not need it any more...
