Kernel compiling - zipslack

After weeks of trying to get HostAP working with my computer i have deleted it all and started again.

I am going to ensure everything is working, step by step. starting with a compile of the kernel.

It doesnt, i cannot compile a kernel - just heaps of errors about missing libraries.

Question:
I am using Zipslack, what to i need to install be able to compile a kernel?
Will these below help?

glibc-2.3.2-i486-3
glibc-solibs-2.3.2-i486-3
glib-1.2.10-i386-2
glib2-2.2.3-i486-1
cxxlibs-5.1.0-i486-1
hotplug-2003_08_05-noarch-3
isapnptools-1.26-i386-1
kernel-modules-2.4.23-i486-1
module-init-tools-0.9.14-i486-2
pcmcia-cs-3.2.5-i486-1
umsdos-progs-1.13-i386-1
util-linux-2.12-i486-1
binutils-2.14.90.0.7-i486-1
gcc-3.3.2-i486-1
make-3.80-i386-1
wireless-tools-26-i486-1

Using Zipslack on an OLD toshiba 486 laptop, 2Gb hdd, 24Mb ram.

Any help would be great.

You probably need also atleast bin86, libc-dev and libncurses-dev. (Well, I don't know that are the development packages packaged as a separate package or part of the binary package (is there glibc and glibc-dev separately)).

What is the first error you encounter while running 'make menuconfig' ?
