kernel 2.6.5 network

I thought I compiled the kernel correctly. I made sure to have netowrk option/cards selected.
however when 2.6.5 loads there are only 2 mod's loading
when I have 2.4.22 load i have 12. I assume the lack of modules is why the eth0 does nto get detected and netconfig does not config it
I tried using modprobe to start the mods on 2.4.22 in 2.6.5 but it cannot find them
What am I missing?

Did you compile your eth0 as a module or inside the kernel (then you don't have to modprobe anything)?
Can you do a:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.10
ifconfig
, then see your eth0 activated?
