KDM root password won't work

I have Slack 10 installed. I can type startx and get into KDE just fine. I can type KDM and type a user and password and get into KDE just fine. But when I type KDM and then type root as the user, I can click into the password box but nothing will type into it. I figured it might just be invisible, so I typed my password anyway, but it doesn't work.
Anyone know what is happening here? Sorry I am so new, but I'm learning (I think)

Not sure about KDM but GDM has a setting you have to turn on to allow root login.

The reason it doesn't work is because it shouldn't.

never log in as root to a desktop.

iirc, you can allow root to login (and set which non-root users can/can't as well) - either thru the KDE control center, or by editing .kdmrc

I can do that, but I was wondering why I couldn't do the other. I figured there was a setting somewhere, and this is all about learning Linux for me.
