KDM Not Loading on Restart

Just dropped a fresh Slack 10.2 install on a box... Loaded up KDE 3.5.3 from linuxpackages.net and everything is working fine there.

I updated xinitrc to point to KDE and modified inittab to use runlevel 4.

The KDM loads and lets me login just fine. KDE works like a champ -- UNTIL I try to do a "Log Off... Restart Computer..." When that happens, the system exits KDE/X but hangs when trying to launch the KDM again (X doesn't even startup.)

Kernel 2.4.?? (whatever version comes with Slackware 10.2)
X.org 6.8.2
KDE 3.5.3
QT 3.3.6

I'm going to try a kernel rebuild to 2.6.17.xx right now to see if that fixes anything.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Have you tried launching KDM manually as root from the console?

It might also be a good idea to check the Xorg debug files in /var/log.

i'm not sure whether installing the new kernel will solve your problem. Why don't you try to get the official KDE from Slackware-current repository? It works, but you should upgrade/install some application (mostly are libraries needed to run KDE 3.5.3). Check for other thread about this, as it has been discussed several times.
