KDE won't retain settings

i don't know if this is normal behavior or not can someone verify?

so I'm in KDE, i move an icon on my desktop somewhere, log out of kde and log back in, and the icon is back to the same spot. wtf?

i change the properties of an icon to point to a different application, log out of kde and back in, and boom, the icon points to the original icon again.

thoughts?

From the 1st look it sounds like a permission issue.

What user are we talking about? root or non-root?
What version of KDE?

If it is the standard user, do:
cd ~/Desktop
ls -la
and watch for the 1st 3 lines:

mine are bellow:
Code:
drwx------ 3 dd users 400 2004-09-15 21:51 ./
drwx--x--x 36 dd users 1696 2004-09-16 14:43 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 dd users 69 2004-07-07 18:58 .directory
Note that all files belong to me "dd users" and I have write permission to ./

Well there is an option, I think it's under Login Manager in Control Center, for either saving your session or starting with new one every time... maybe that's set wrong?

I'm having the same problem here, KDE 3.2.3 (SimplyMepis 2004.01)

I'm setting up root's environment, and the permissions looked fine. Besides, if permission was not granted, then it assumably would not allow changes in the first place.

I looked in the Login Manager and found nothing... in fact, I scoured the entire control center. I find it unlikely, but perhaps one of the following might help?

- Security & Privacy > Privacy ... clearing entries?

- KDE Components > Session Manager > On Login, Restore previous session

... neither of those seem very likely. I'm stumped and very frustrated. I even went so far as to shut down X, modify a file with vi, and startx again, with no success.

By running a virtual window, I was able to monitor when the settings were changed, by repeatedly doing a cat on one of the files that is being reset. The change occurs upon graphical login.

If it's relevant, the file I'm looking at is:
/var/lib/menu-xdg/applications/menu-xdg/nedit.desktop
KDE keeps resetting the Icon= setting so that there is no icon.

I should be more specific. I can see an icon, but it's the default KDE gear icon, instead of the spiffy Nedit icon. I can change it, and it displays right, but after a restart it's wrong again

(incidentally, I unchecked "show icons on desktop", but this is on the kicker bar)

searched around and another user gave this as a workaround:
Quote:
First, put the applets on your Kicker bar.

Second, start a terminal and type in:

cd ~/.kde/share/config
cp kickerrc kickerrc.backup

Now log out.

Whilst at the log-in menu, press CTRL-ALT-F6 to go to tty.

Log on and type:
cd ~/.kde/share/config
cp kickerrc.backup kickerrc

Press CTRL-ALT-F7 and log back into KDE.

Everything should now be okay, and future exits and restarts will work properly.

- KDE Components > Session Manager >
Try starting with an empty session.
From my experience, "Restore Previous Session" restores it to what it was BEFORE you changed it.
