KDE / startx does not display on my monitor

I am running slackware 14 on a dell dimension 4300 with a compaq 7500 monitor. i typed lspci and it says i have a VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF.

when i type startx it loads up but my monitor can't handle it, or something??? because the monitor goes blank and then turns off, but I can hear the computer is still doing stuff...

Thanks to anyone who can help :Pengy:

update:

more info: when i try startx, the monitor first tells me that the screen resolution is too high. so i figure it is probably the screen resolution is too high for this monitor, OR maybe HorizSync 30-55 needs to be set? I don't know how to do this, either.

I ran xorgsetup and tried restarting the computer, but this did not fix the problem.

then i tried looking at my xorg.conf file in nano and it seems to show monitor0 monitor1 monitor2 device0 device1 device2 and screen0 screen1 and screen2i am wondering if this is related to the problem?

so I tried running X -configure and it returned this to me:
Quote:

(++) Using config file:"/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed.
Server terminated with error (2) closing log file.

I have taken the monitor specifications from here http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ctID=c00665774 and the r128 driver settings from here http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...5&postcount=10 to provide my suggestion for a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

that fixed it, along with i had to remove the serverlayout sections and all of the extra monitor1,2, screen1,2, and device1,2, sections. for some reason i believe it was configured for 3 monitors, 3 screens, and 3 video cards??? but i applied your settings above and cutted out those sections i mentioned and the gui is working great. i did switch from KDE to XFCE and it is running much smoother. Thanks.

That's good! It has been a while since I have had to deal with an xorg.conf file.
