I`m new to linux, so i get one what suits for me - Slackware.
I installed all system(2cd).Now I`m logging in.Typing root, pass and then startx or startkde,
It giwes me an error?
Why?
Wenn I typed startx it shows me - Just Error,
wenn startkde it shows -cannot connetc to X server!
WTF i need to do?
First run 'xorgsetup' (easy, but may not detect hardware very well, 'specially monitors) or 'xorgconfig' (has more options, but you need to know specs of monitor {Horizontal/Vertical refresh rates, etc})
After that, type 'startx'
If you want it to always boot to the GUI, edit /etc/initab and change the following line :
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:
to this
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:
Don't forget to setup a regular user before you get too far (in console):
Code:
adduser
(Try not to run as 'root' very much. As a matter of fact, try not to run as 'root' at all!)
Hope that helps some, and Welcome to Slackware!

xorgconfig is quite straight forward to use, just make sure you know your system fairly well. xorgconfig will ask you a series of questions about your hardware, that is, type of keyboard, mouse, and monitor settings, video RAM. When you've finished running xorgconfig then type startx. Also do use the settings kindly provided by cwwilson721. You only want to run your unit as root for the initial set-up of your system.
I'm assuming you've logged on as root before you ran xorgconfig. What happened after you ran xorgconfig then typed startx?
You can always run xorgconfig again and overwrite your previous xorgconfig file. Perhaps you entered incorrect information when setting up xorgconfig.
Good luck, man.
Perhaps...wrong information,couse it`s too smart for me
Tryed about 10 times...nothin!
Don't let it get you down. I didn't get Slackware installed properly the first time or the second time I tried.
Slackware is an excellent learning experience, you will really learn about how linux works using slack.
kwarchil: What makes you think that Slackware is even the right distro for you?
An (un?)educated guess, I suspect.
Still, not a bad choice.

Slackware is not difficult. This is a myth.
The reading is going to have to be done sooner or later with any distro. Slack just requires you to do it a little sooner. Nothing wrong with that. I believe people's expectations get in the way of reality here.

Well, i'm a slacker my self, and i admit that it's not very difficult to me, but if you'd asked me a year ago i wouldn't even be able to set up X.org manually...
