Problem: KDE is not loading. After entering "startx" I am presented usually either with KDE-styled mouse cursor and non-X gray background, or with pure X. As far as I remember KDE loaded once fight after installation before I've edited xorg.conf.
Information:
Slackware 10.0
D750,128Mb,IBM DLTA 20 Gb, GeForce2 MX400 32 Mb
I tried to install as few KDE packages as possible. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what packages I've chosen. X seems to start successfully (there no error messages in log of X). Though after running Xorg -probeonly my machine was stuck and didn't respond to Ctrl-C and Ctrl-Z. The fact is that many of my friends who've used same disks for Slack installations experience this problem with starting KDE, but not GNOME.
May it be hardware problem? Or miscunfiguration of X?
I've tried "startx" with system generated xorg.conf, still no luck. Xorg -probeonly always make my computer stuck. Is it problem with X binary or hardware?
Thanks
Hi BajaNick!
Thank you for your reply!
Xorg starts with no errors, but Xorg -probeonly make my computer stuck. That's the problem. On the one hand Xorg starts with startx (I see X mouse pointer & background and then even KDE's mouse and background gray color), but on the other hand probing make it crashed. so I assume that it may be hardware problem or corrupted X binary.
Should I compile X? Or are there any seetings for X that I'd left out?
Thanks again. I really appreciate your time and efforts to solve this strange problem.
Warm regards
Hi everyone!
Yes I've made xorg.conf with xorgconfig. I made it very general. I also tried xorg.conf which was with destribution. Still no luck. I have thin channel so it would be better for me to obtain source files and build X myself.
Thank you for your responses.
Any ideas or clues to what may be the problem?
I've made KDE work (load) in slackware 9.0 after adding and deleting something like "echo Step 3..." in start kde, startx. I also changed "startkde" to "exec startkde" in .xinitrc. And that "shaminism" worked!
My hardware seems to work fine.
Thanks again
Kindly regards
Maybe try jdvelasquezs suggestions. Install swaret and modify version in the swaret.conf file to 10 and see what happens. Why are you running probeonly switch?
Hi!
For what purpose do I need to install swaret? As I've understood it can resolve dependencies and upgrade packets. I've said that I have weak channel so downloading new packets would take too much time. Or do you think the problem is in unrosolved dependencies? In such case I would receive error messages about missing libraries I believe.
I've used probeonly switch to see whether my xorg works fine. Seems like not very fine. Should I compile X? I've already started downloading src files.
Thank you all guys for your submissions!
Kindly regards
Just try to reinstall the complete xorg from your cd.
Uninstall first and then reinstall, maybe it helps.
Anyway, does dmesg give you some errors?
(I had hangs in kde with kernel 2.4.26 and KDE 3.2, it was something of an really old cd-rom driver, I fixed it by installing Kernel 2.6.7 from testing on the second cd ....)
Hi!
ok isis I'll try reinstalling X this evening using pkgtool. thanks for advice!
I didn't mention dmesg messages. botting the system goes fine. One more detail: when starting xorg I get 3 messages regarding IPv6. Do xorg require support for IPv6 in kernel?
Thank you! I really appreciate your time!
cheers
I just think yo may have corrupted packages on you CD's, with swaret you can make sure you have the right packages (updated with bug fixes too), even better if you configure swaret to check for MD5 and GPG.
Thank you for your valuable advices!
I've compiled X11 and now I'm able to start KDE (didn't tried other window managers on my machine). but onn my friend's computer I've installed slack 10 from the same disks and fluxbox/Window Maker are working fine. Strange...
One more detail: while running
Xorg -probeonly
my computer is stuck as before, ttys are blank and not responding to keystrokes. Should I visit Xorg site and report this?
So, I've got it working! Thank you again for your time and
Warm regards
