KDE jams my computer after logging out.

I just nuked my hard drive and installed Slackware 12.0. When I enter startx KDE starts up and everything is fine, but when I logout the computer jams up.

I pressed CTRL + ALT + F1, nothing. CTRL + ALT + DEL, nothing. I end up having to press the power button to turn off the computer.

I was running Slackware 11.0 previously with 2.6.18.12 with no problems.

I'm using an old laptop with a generic video card.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Try ctrl+alt+backspace. What does happen if you run from init 4 mode?

Thank you Alien_Hominid, I appreciate your response.

CTRL+ALT+Backspace didn't do anything. I changed init from 3 to 4, and the computer locks up like before.

My guess would be a framebuffer issue. Check this thread for some tips and possible solutions.

I have the same issue. Or somewhat the same. My mum(not I) is using KDE and when she presses "shutdown the computer" it locks up. The KDE starts exiting and ends with a black screen and a pointer on it. If I switch to the console or ssh to host and "shutdown -h now" it locks. the console says "system halted" without init going through rc.0.
"Solved" it by removing mum from power group, so she exits from session and then presses the poweroff button on the PC.

Interesting thread, thank you.

Does anybody know where I can get drivers? I'm running a Compaq computer, and can't seem to find the proper drivers via a search.

I fixed it. Under the device section I changed the driver to "savage". I also changed the HorizSync to 28.0 - 96.0 and VertRefresh to 50.0 - 75.0.
