KDE causes monitor "out of range"

Here's something that's really stumping me. My setup is Slackware 13.0 on an aging box with an Nvidia Geforce 5200FX video card. I recently installed the proprietary driver (v 173.14.25 using Nvidia's installation tool) so I could use a 16:10 resolution with my Asus vw222u monitor (1440x900, since the card doesn't support the native 1680x1050). I let nvidia-xconfig set up the xorg.conf, then went in and edited it manually to force the resolution I want to prevent stretching.

The problem comes in when I try to startx. KDE comes up and I see the startup screen with the first icon (the hard drive); then when the next few icons start to resolve the screen blanks and I get my monitor's "out of range" notification floating around. This is definitely a KDE issue because I'm in xfce right now without a hitch.

No errors are present in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and I've tried starting KDE both with and without the HorizSync and VertRefresh options in the monitor section of my xorg.conf (just in case the Edid isn't detected properly). Here's the relevant info (if you want to see more, just ask).

xorg.conf (HorzSync and VertRefresh taken from monitor specs):

Take out:

Code:

Modes  "1440x900"
Then restart kde. Set the resolution and refresh rates from within System Settings.

zytsef 04-19-2010 06:30 PM

That did not solve the issue. Same as before.

It might help to know that I boot into runlevel 3, then try 'startx'. Whenever X is stopped I get the out of range notice when returning to the command line, even when coming back from a functional xfce startup.

Go into Start > Settings > Nvidia X Server Settings, and try from there. I have no modes in my xorg.conf, and I have no problem in any window manager.

zytsef 04-19-2010 10:08 PM

When I can actually access the Nvidia gui (when, for instance, I'm in xfce) then it tells me that my resolution is of course 1440x900, like I set in xorg.conf. That doesn't change the fact that KDE is unusable when I try to start it up. The screen blanks and all I get is the monitor's "out of range" notice. Removing the "Modes" line from xorg.conf and starting xfce gives me a 1600x1200 resolution stretched (the highest my video card supports) and KDE is still broken.

I'm pretty sure that this isn't an X problem (at least not an immediately obvious one). Somehow KDE (and only KDE) manages to screw everything up.

mlangdn 04-19-2010 10:23 PM

In the Monitor Section, change the refresh rates to something smaller:

HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0

Then see what happens. After re-looking at your xorg.conf, it may very well be out of range for your monitor.

I just looked up your monitor, and the refresh rates are correct in your config. I should have done that first.

I appreciate the attention, mlangdn. As you can see, I've tried removing the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines completely from xorg.conf to let X detect it from my monitor's Edid. It hasn't made a bit of difference. The fact remains that I can start X at the resolution I want by using any other window manager that isn't KDE. This makes me feel that there isn't anything wrong with my xorg.conf.

That is, unless KDE is trying to use some feature of X that no other WM I've tried uses. Is anyone aware of any logs KDE leaves behind?

mRgOBLIN 04-19-2010 10:52 PM

I would expect that perhaps you have krandrtray running and that's setting your monitor to an unsupported frequency.

You can probably test this by creating a new user and running kde to see if the same thing happens.

I think the config file is here
~/.kde/share/config/krandrrc

zytsef 04-19-2010 11:26 PM

The new user suffers from the same trouble. I don't see a krandr config file in either my own ~/.kde/share/config or that of the new user.

Maybe I need to add something to one of these other rc files? kcmdisplayrc has a promising name, but it's only 5 lines and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm grasping at straws.

aocab 04-20-2010 12:07 AM

With my old nvidia card, I've always had a problem
with the resolution X would start up with (no matter
what settings I used in xorg.conf).

It always started up with the highest resolution
supported by the monitor:

(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for display device CRT-0:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1024x768": 65.0 MHz, 48.4 kHz, 60.0 Hz

This was not the setting I wanted X to start up with
so I had to put some entries in /etc/kde/kdm/Xsetup
(I use init 4) to have X start at the resolution I wanted.

xrandr -s 800x600
xrandr -r 85

I'm not sure but maybe it is trying to use the 1680x1050
resolution (giving you the out of range message) but should
be using the 1440x900?

Maybe you could try something similar
to set the resolution/refresh-rate to
something you know works?

Just a thought...
HTH

zytsef 04-20-2010 12:33 AM

Well, I finally figured it out. Turns out KDE wasn't at fault after all. I had uninstalled mesa previous to installing the Nvidia driver because I had heard of that Nvidia supplies it's own implementation of OpenGL. Seems like it's not complete, though, as I was missing libGLU (which is required for KDE).

You'll notice above that I mention the "out of range" notice every time I went back to the command line. KDE was ditching partway through loading because it couldn't find libGLU and returning me to the command line where I couldn't see anything. I discovered this by running 'startkde' from a terminal in xfce where I could see the messages when it failed. It hadn't occurred to me that I could switch desktop environments like that before.

Anyways, I reinstalled mesa, let the Nvidia installer overwrite whatever it needs to again, and here I am back in KDE. Thank you all for your input.
