KDE 4.5.5 decided to start random freezing up, sigh!

Long time Linux user, almost 16 years I guess. I remember when it WAS hard to install. Having to tune the graphics card from the command line, no graphical partitioners or installers, a real hassle to get the network up, not to mention that onboard S.I.S graphics chipset, and those onboard winmodems!! Hardly ever used Windozs in all that time, but sometimes, just sometimes ............. Love the learning, love the philosophy, love the challenge. O.K so what bugs me today?

KDE has decided to randomly freeze on me. I can move the mouse around the screen and that's the lot. No clicks, no response, f*** all!! I have to kill the power and start again.

Interestingly enough one account seems immune from this most irritating trait. Root and a newly created account both suffer. So where to start looking? I don't obviously want to do a full reinstall.

I really am out of my depth here but these may or may not be relevant.

Just a quick update. I never did sort out what the issue was but simply avoid the issue by selecting KDE safe mode when I login via kdm. No crashes and I don't really seem to be missing much except for some cpu intensive eye candy. Thanks for the replies brianL and j9x.inca, appreciated. Will wait for Slack 14 and see if that solves it.

The problem is bound to be nouveau (assuming that the system in your signature specs is the system in question?). On my system I was getting random xorg crashes when logging in and out. The kernel ring buffer was full of errors relating to nouveau... to cut a long story short, I built my own 3.2.28 kernel using the config from -current's 3.2.28 and the problem was resolved.

You could also try installing the nvidia proprietary driver.

Your problem is addressed in the releases' CHANGES_AND_HINTS.txt file:

  Regardless of your chipset (though it seems more common with intel), if KDE

  crashes on startup, try disabling the Composite extension (which will also

  disable all of the fancy desktop effects).  Place the following content in

  a file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/disable-composite.conf:

    Section "Extensions"

      Option "Composite" "Disable"

    EndSection

Indeed. With 14.0 RC2, in some bad days, I met this freezing problem several times...
My hardware: ThinkPad T430/i5 3210 2.5 GHz/4x2 GB DDR 1600/HD 4000 + Nvidia 5400M. The 5400M video card was disabled via BIOS.

not solved. I just met the freezing problem with composite disabled......

Well I added the

But as I mentioned I am mostly running it in KDE safe mode now which eliminates the problem anyway. See if Slack 14 solves the issue.
