I've just installed slack 10.1 but I want to use KDE 3.4.2 so I downloaded the KDE packages, Arts-1.4.2, Cyrus-Sasl-2.1.21 and qt-3.3.4
do I need to upgrade other packages?

do I need to upgrade other packages?
What's the proper order to install these packages?
PS:I don't want to upgrade to slack-current because I don't trust auto-update tools like swaret, slapt-get or slackpkg
You need to follow the instructions in the following two links if you want to compile Qt and KDE from source. Be careful, it takes a long time to compile KDE from source. For some systems it might take 15+ hours. Compiling KDE 3.4
Make sure to follow the order specified in the following page: Installation instructions
OR, you might preder to download KDE-3.4.1 in a tgz format from LinuxPackages
I don't think you need to worry about slackpkg. I believe all it really uses is pkgtool. Anyway, I used slackpkg, changed the mirror to point to -current, did "slackpkg update" and "slackpkg upgrade kde" and that seemed to work just fine. The only packages listed for upgrade were kde ones.

that's why I was using slackpkg, but it has weird behaviors like sometimes it just skip some packages, once I did a "slackpkg upgrade slackware" it told me that there was 105 packages to download and install, it finished I tried again doing "slackpkg upgrade slackware" and again I saw 35 packages to download and install,it's a big problem because for exemple KDE won't work without arts lib and if it install KDE but not arts then it's a pain in the a.s
