On my Slack 11 box its stock KDE has worked without problems
for about two years taking whatever I threw at it.(nice)
When I loged in this morning suddenly the usual window manager
functions--dragging a window, reseizing, drawing a child window frame etc.
simply didn't work. Even the pager box will show only one desktop
no matter how I try to re-configure it. N changes in the KDE set-up
tools seem to help at all. When I open a pgms, their windows occupy
only the lower right of the desktop, overwrite each other and are unable
to be repositioned. In Mozilla, for instance, a menu dropdown box will
dropdown, but not retain focus on menu items and hides itself behind
the main app window making it un-usable.
But this is slack so I just added a user selected Xfce with xwmconfig
and now I'm writing this in Xfce/Mozilla. In Xfce all the usual WM
functions work. So I doubt this is a Xorg config problem. I'm at
a loss how to diagnose this further.
Any suggestions for a quick fix? I'm about ready to re-install the
KDE packages. <UGH>
I don't have that backup (mea culpa!) But this is teaching me
how valuable that could be. I should have noted that a root login
on my box also runs KDE as default and the same problems are there
as well. Also the global /var/X11R6/lib/xinit/xinitrc matches the
example in "Slackware Essentials", as does the local user copy
of xinitrc
With "adduser" defaults I added a new user, logged in, and when
KDE ran its first time startup screens, I acepted all its defaults.
Ahh..but now I have a new user with the exact same problems.
It was a good thought though,

Since the new user had the same problems, you've eliminated the cause being something in ~/.kde/.
Since you reinstalled kdebase and it solved the problem, you can delete this new user and the user's home directory.
