Kaudiocreator and DVD access for users in Slackware 10?
Despite hiccups, I managed to get Slackware 10 installed using the standard 2.4.26 kernel. I have a combo DVD/CDRW, yet I'm puzzled on why Kaudiocreator will give the error message "Access denied to /dev/cdrom" for the user, but not root.
The same can be said for accessing DVD as a user.
My append file has 'hdc=ide-scsi"
and my fstab is:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto defaults,noauto,user,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd auto defaults,noauto,user,ro,exec 0 0
I do have the dvd and cdrom directories in /mnt and the user name is inserted into the cdrom, audio, video and disk groups at /etc/groups.
Sniffing at the command line using ls -lah /dev/cdrom results in:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root cdrom 8 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr0
ls -lah /dev/sr0:
brw-rwxrwx 1 root disk 11 /dev/sr0
ls -lah /dev/hdc:
brw-rwxrwx 1 root disk 22 /dev/hdc
Just for giggles, I changed the group in /dev/cdrom to disk. Same results. It's a real headscratcher for me.
What am I missing here to get permissions in user space?
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto defaults,noauto,users,ro,umask=000 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd auto defaults,noauto,users,ro,umask=000 0 0
Erp, same results. "Access denied to /dev/cdrom" Even changing group name in /dev/cdrom from disk to cdrom.
I just realized, I had my lilo configured for both the 2.4.26 kernel and 2.6.7 kernels. I'm wondering if the modules inserted by the 2.6.7 install had replaced some modules needed by 2.4.26. The rc.module entry now points to rc.module-2.6.7
In that case, I'll try installing Slackware tomorrow with the 2.4.26 kernel (and use that fstab suggestion) only and try again.
Well I tried a fresh reinstall of Slackware 10, using just kernel 2.4.26 and having "hdc=ide-scsi" in the append file.
Same results. I can play KSCD as a user, but while KaudioCreator recognizes CD tracks, an attempt to create an Ogg file off of one results in "Access denied to /dev/cdrom"
KaudioCreator works in root. I suspect I'll have the same problem when trying to access data DVD's.
This time around I set chmod 777 to /dev/sr0 and to /dev/hdc
I did set fstab to : /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9960 noauto,users,ro,umask=000 0 0
