I don't know man, while using Ubuntu I had the feeling that compiling your own optimized kernel was being made harder for people who want to, and never managed to successfully compile a working kernel, even though I had routinely done that during my earlier experiences with Fedora and Slackware, and I don't know why.

That was one of a few reasons why I went back to Slackware. This stuff just works, and I'm very happy that I have no barriers to stop me doing it when I want to. The stock kernel is already very good, and I wouldn't be arsed to try and improve it if I didn't have enough time on my hands.

Can't help but think of the latest openbsd song lyrics planet of the users
Quote:
Way back in my time
Open source kept
everyone choosing
People knew the insides
Of devices they were using

Hackers had a doorway
Now it's locked and
dumbed down so much
One button coma
Stop the future truly outta touch

CHORUS
Does it sound like a paradise
or a way to die
while alive and a loser
I'm a man from the open past
And I'll never last
on the Planet of the Users
Something I'm sure all slackers can sympathize with.

The songs well worth a download by the way. Sounds very much like The Police back in the day.
