I'm familiar with slackbuilds and the guides on how to use them. I have always installed from source with slackware and have never had any trouble managing my packages. In fact, I find it easier because I know exactly what's going on. My system was a mess when I used various package management tools, and the whole thing was a black box to me. Now I understand how everything works because I set it up myself and have control over every detail.

Lots of people switch to slackware specifically because it's easier to build packages from source than it is with other distros.
