j2re-1.4.2

When I unpack jre-1.4.2 how can I tell where the directories are that it is being installed to,specifically I need to know how to find the executable?

Is it the Slackware package? By unpack, you mean using installpkg or tar?
You can use: find / -name 'java'

If it's a package you can see what it installed with: less /var/log/packages/jre*

Or to find java executable, try
which java

(assuming /usr/lib/java/jre/bin is in your PATH, added
by the /etc/profile.d/jre.sh script which is installed by
jre package)

This is what I got for the command which java
bash-2.05b# which java
which: no java in (/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin)
bash-2.05b#
.But I think it is installedd because I used swaret --install java and it seemed to be installing

If you used the rpm utility to install the rpm package then there won't be a log in /var/log/packages, however if you used rpm2tgz then it will be, use the * at the end like I typed in here.

I would highly recommend you to uninstall that version and install the official Slackware package (get it from http://slackware.com/pb you can get both jre and j2sdk from there) since they will configure all things to play nicely, like the profile script that keefaz mentioned.
